Old prints fade, crease and collect marks over time. Much of that damage can be repaired digitally.
Start with a good scan
Scan prints flat at a high resolution, ideally 600 dpi or more for small prints. Avoid taking a phone photo of the print if you can, as glare and angle will reduce quality.
What can be repaired
- Scratches, dust and surface marks
- Creases, tears and missing corners
- Fading and colour shifts
- Stains and discolouration
Colourisation
Black-and-white photos can be colourised. Because colours are inferred, any details you know, such as clothing or the setting, help produce a more accurate result.
Handle originals carefully
Keep the original print safe and unaltered. Restoration is done on the digital copy.
